from everyday experience.

For the proper use of understanding, a wider consciousness is needed and a higher
standpoint to enlarge one’s horizons.

God will remain somehow remote and “out there” unless there is a complete turnabout
into which all references to the high and the beyond is translated into terms of depth.

High civilizations do not fail; they blossom. (That’s until they are crushed by fascist
force.)

In high states, users have reported that they can perceive connections and associations of
ideas that were not accessible to them in the non-high state.

In the 1960’s, more people than ever before had a glimpse of a higher, happier, more
living reality. For a moment, they really SAW.

In the 20th century, mythology speaks almost a dead language, for the modern mind
knows of no order of truth higher than historical fact. Myth is therefore rejected.

Is it not strange that an experience which is regarded with such fear and distrust by those
who have not had it, is so highly regarded by those who have?

originated in altered states of consciousness in individuals.

It is prohibited in highly technological and complex civilizations to lift the reality curtain
and gaze upon the naked beyond.

Jesus did not say that this higher state of consciousness realized in him was his alone for
all time. Nor did he call us to worship him.

Jesus showed us the way to a higher state and called upon us to realize it, to make it real,
actual—individually and as the race.

Liberation while living is considered to be the highest experience, a fusion of the
individual with the universal.

Magnificent revelations, both spiritual and philosophical can occur marking the highest
union of experience and intellect.

Members of the new breed seek a culture founded in higher consciousness, a culture
whose institutions are based on love, a culture that fulfills the perennial philosophy.

The glory and wonder of pure existence belong to another order, beyond the power of

The new state is one in which we can reorganize or re-imprint our nervous system for

higher consciousness that is the birthright of all of us.

You cannot accept the political or spiritual leadership of anyone you cannot get high

According to Freud, our best and highest aspirations are merely symptoms of neurosis.
He defines genius as nothing more than sublimated sexual drives, and our subconscious
as a sewer inhabited by monsters and vile incestrous desires.

For most people, this discovery is a glorious surprise. Mystics come back raving about
higher levels of perceptions where one sees realities a hundred times more beautiful and
meaningful than the familiar scripts of normal life.

I hope that religious organizations in this country will begin to understand that highs
triggered by drugs may be more relevant to spiritual development than appearances of
spirituality on Sunday mornings.

Most people, it seems, who relax and “let go” have the universal experience of
discovering a single Reality, a oneness with all things, an identity with God, with the
Supreme Being, with the Higher Self, or whatever you wish to call it.

The ability of the drug to connect diverse people in empathic bonds suggested exciting
social applications. Once people learned to share others’ perceptions, a higher level of
human consciousness might be possible.

The condition of alienation, of being asleep, of being unconscious, of being out of one’s
mind, is the condition of the normal man. Society highly values its normal man. It
educates children to lose themselves and to become absurd, and thus to be normal.

The current preoccupation with these latter-day mind modifiers ranges from a hedonistic
sensuality to a search for the highest of philosophical abstractions, from a tool for
deriving scientific data to a sacrament taken to achieve loss of self and union with the All

The esoteric core of the great religious and spiritual traditions could be seen as roadmaps
to higher states of consciousness, and some of the most profound material in these
traditions became especially clear and meaningful during psychedelic sessions.

The expansion of consciousness is no other than extending our visions to comprehend
many levels at once and above all, to grasp those higher levels in which the discords of
the lower levels are resolved.

The fact that visionary experiences has always, at all times and everywhere been very
highly valued, means that at all times and in all cultures systematic efforts have been
made to induce this experience.

The highest point of the experience is a moment of transcendence in which the user
passes out of the everyday world into a paradisiacal egoless state in which he believes he
has attained some ultimate revelation about the nature of mind and the universe.

The significance of incarnation and resurrection is not that Jesus a human like us but
rather that we are gods like him—or at least have the potential to be. This is the secret of
all ages and all spiritual traditions. This is the highest mystery.

Thou shalt evolve to a higher state of being and ultimately return to the Godhead which is
your very self, your ever-present Divine Condition prior to all conditions, names and
forms.

Users often find that they can become absorbed, with a childlike intensity, in nearly
anything and that it will seem fresh, interesting, and highly pleasurable—even if it is
something they have done many times.

What I learned from Tim (Leary) had nothing to do with drugs but it had everything to do
with getting high. His die-hard fascination with the human brain was not about altering it,
but about using it to the fullest.

A high does of LSD in the right circumstances brings you into contact not only with your
deep self but with other dimensions—extraterrestrial intelligence, a collective mind,
intelligent unity of life, living God, things that they don’t understand and can’t control
and don’t want free and available.

ancient and Oriental religions and philosophies—It has become increasingly clear that
these systems of belief reflect profound understanding of the human mind and of unusual
states of consciousness, embodying knowledge that deals with the most universal aspect
of human existence, and thus is highly relevant for all of us.

Blake says the landscapes and the architectures in which they live are highly organized,
they are articulated beyond anything which the mortal and perishing sight could possibly
imagine, that they were in some sense super-real, they were more real than ordinary
reality.

In the midst of our emotional turmoil about the drug problem, many of us fail to notice
that most of the authorities who are supported by public funds, quoted extensively in the
scientific and lay press, and sought out for advice by policy makers have never
themselves experienced highs in association with drugs.

It is clear that psychedelics have the potential to cut through whatever blocks stand
between us and higher experiences, magically letting us enjoy, if only temporarily,
transcendent states. I hope it is not necessary to belabor the point that this potential is
realized if only set and setting support it.

It is highly desirable that each guide possess a broad background especially including
knowledge of history, literature, philosophy, mythology, art and religion. Materials from
all of these fields and from others, emerge in many of the sessions and the guide must
recognize the materials if he is to be of maximum effectiveness.

Jesus was aware of himself as a finished product of the new humanity which is to come—
the new humanity which is to inherit the earth, establish the Kingdom, usher in the New
Age. His mission and his teaching have at their heart the development of a new and
higher state of consciousness on a species-wide basis.

Let’s try to bring about a new and glowing synthesis, a new higher consciousness that
brings together the East and West, the head and the heart, science and spirituality and
knowledge and wisdom. (Knowledge here means what the ego “knows” which isn’t
wisdom.)

Most of the subjects felt that the psychedelic experience could sometimes supply a
guiding vision which provided direction and meaning for one’s life thereafter. They
mentioned intense emotions such as love, compassion, or empathy, and the recognition
that the mind can be and should be highly trained.

The ancient and pre-industrial societies have held non-ordinary states of consciousness in
high esteem and used them for a variety of purposes—diagnosing and healing diseases,
ritual, spiritual, and religious activity, cultivation of extrasensory perception and artistic
inspiration.

Weren’t the sixties, in retrospect, a decade of romance, splendor, optimism, idealism,
individual courage, high aspirations, aesthetic innovation, spiritual wonder, exploration,
and search? Weren’t we happier about each other and more optimistic when the high
times were rolling? (That was Timothy Leary.)

When the non-ordinary states are opened up to them, even scientifically cautious and
highly intelligent people of our own time and culture find these experiences deeply
moving and personally meaningful, providing them with dramatic breakthroughs in their
beliefs.

While these new territories have not yet been recognized by Western academic
psychiatry, they are not, by any means, unknown to humanity. On the contrary, they have
been systematically studied and held in high esteem by ancient and pre-industrial cultures
since the dawn of human history.

As an educational psychologist, I’m interested in the implications of LSD research for the
study of human learning and further human development. Through the LSD experiences I
have learned to look at myself and society in a new way. These experiences have been, in
effect, an additional higher education for me, equal in impact, effort, knowledge, beauty,
and scope to obtaining a doctorate at Stanford.

As knowledge of the existence of mind-expanding plants and chemicals dawned upon the
consciousness of Western man, swift reevaluations of our attitudes toward certain so-
called “primitive” tribes became necessary. It became apparent that some of these
cultures had preserved the key to higher knowledge which the civilized world had
relegated to the status of myth.

Harvard—Over 400 “subjects” shared high-dosage psychedelic experiences with the
researchers in an atmosphere of aesthetic precision, philosophic inquiry, inner search,
self-confident dignity, intellectual openness, philosophic courage and high humor. The
historical impact of this “swarm” of influential scholars has not yet been recognized by
the still-timid press, popular or scientific. (That was Timothy Leary.)

In spite of our mechanical sophistication we may well be savages, simple brutes quite
unaware of the potential within. It is highly likely that coming generations will look back
at us and wonder: how could they so childishly play with their simple toys and primitive
words and remain ignorant of the speed, power and relational potential within? How
could they fail to use the equipment they possessed?

Leary believed that the human race is presently evolving to a higher level of
consciousness and a greater spiritual awareness. His research with LSD seemed to bear
out the fact that our nervous systems are equipped to receive a vastly greater spectrum of
reality than we realized; and once the veils of perception are cleansed, wars, racism,
competitiveness and violence will be seen as old, outgrown, pre-human traits.

Our society classifies an intoxicated individual as criminal or noncriminal on the basis of
which drug he used to get high. It’s like living in an occupied country. I feel like I’m in
one of those old movies about Occupied Europe from the 1940’s. That is precisely how
the majority of pot smokers feel. They are the largest minority group in the country and
yet they are living in a weird scenario straight out of the French Underground.

Perceptions of encompassing light, infinite energy, ineffable visions, and
incommunicable knowledge are remarkable in their seeming distinction from perceptions
of the phenomena of the “natural world.” According to mystics, these experiences are
different because they pertain to a higher transcendent reality. What is perceived is said
to come from another world, or at least another dimension.

Socrates tells us that there exists an ideal world above and beyond the world of matter.
“In this other earth the colors are much purer and much more brilliant than they are down
here…The very mountains, the very stones have a richer gloss, a lovelier transparency and
intensity of hue. The precious stones of this lower world, our highly prized cornelians,
jaspers, emeralds and all the rest, are but tiny fragments of these stones above.”

Spiritual experiences of this kind can occur in individuals of high intellectual caliber and
rigorous scientific training, in fact, they are fully compatible with observations
accumulated by various branches of modern research. An important illustration of this
point, for those who emphasize the scientific world-view, is the recent convergence of
quantum-relativistic physics and various mystical traditions.

The experience of cosmic consciousness provides important insights for deepening our
understanding of the highest forms of creativity. The literature on creativity is filled with
examples of extraordinary artistic, scientific, philosophical, and religious inspiration that
came from a transpersonal source and that occurred in non-ordinary states of
consciousness.

Up this gradual stairway of Sense, Understanding, Intuition, we mount to that height from
which we are able to behold, with some degree of calmness, the infinite fields of intuitive
Beauty and Truth, when the screen of the bodily is removed, and the scope of vision
belonging to our highest faculty is realized to be immeasurably beyond all that our most
rapturous visions ever conceived it.

If the human potential that Jesus demonstrated is understood to be within us, if the
capacity to grow to godlike stature is directly experienced by all Christendom as the key
to the Kingdom, then Christianity will fulfill its purpose by encouraging people to evolve,
to transform themselves, to rise to a higher state. (This means the LSD state of cosmic
consciousness. Do phony idiots such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson understand
that?)

A religion that doesn’t produce the ecstatic high becomes secular.
Above the normal life of problems, there exists a second, higher timeless world.
Being high widens perspectives on the physical as well as mental well-being.
Dogs and cats are high all the time.
Ecstasy is something higher or further out than ordinary pleasure, beyond pleasure.
Is affluence mankind’s highest goal?
Learn how to guide high-flying internal aircraft.
Mystics call the highest knowledge unknowing.
Patients who have had vivid experiences of this type have tended to value them highly.
Sexual arousal can reach an unusually high degree.
The free-thinking enlightened individual is the highest ideal of humanity.
The highest mystical awareness comes only when there is freedom from the known.
The Infinite One is communing with this illimitable soul of yours to lift it higher.
The lure of higher consciousness had exercised a fascination across the centuries.
The mind’s pure Essence is Highest Perfect Wisdom.
The outside world may be experienced in a highly intensified manner.
The spirit is transported high above all the faculties.
The stakes are high, but the prize the ultimate.
There are resources of courage, creativity and higher intelligence in all of us.
There exists a second, higher timeless world, a reality more native to you.
There is no substitute for growth to higher consciousness.
Trust your Higher Self.
We possess higher notions of the spiritual.
When I’m high, I can penetrate into the past, recall memories.
Your mind is seething to heights undreamed of.

I’m high! I’m alive and it’s great to be alive and I’m happy and it’s great to be happy and
I’m high and it’s great to be high, and it’s great to be alive and happy and high!

He achieved fuller and clearer recognitions of the nature of reality, of man and of his own
higher nature.

He mentions the quality of light around him; it made the air seem radiant. All his senses
were gratified to the highest degree.

I felt I was ascending and passing into a new dimension, that I was expanding upward as
well as outward into an astral plane, a higher sphere of creation.

I felt so blessed to have seen what I felt was this energy of creation at its purest and
highest vibration.

Music seemed to awaken a depth in me that I never knew existed. With each note I
seemed to soar to higher heights.

The expansion of all visible things had been growing toward its height; it now revealed it
and to the fullest extent I apprehended what is meant by the infinity of space.

The glitter of metal and gems were intensified to the highest pitch of what may be called
intrinsic significance.

dancing, laughing, a quiet network of high intensity conversation.

What are ordinarily dismissed as irrelevant details of speech, behavior, appearance and

right through the socially real grain to a higher order of pattern.

You could look into the face of your friend and get this flickering gleam of interlocking
rapport that moved this friendship to a higher level.

A dandelion I glanced down at grew two feet high. Everything was magnified. As I
strolled, my attention was wholly grasped by a small dewdrop on the grass. It was utterly
captivating.

A sensation of well-being and renewed life flowed through me. The world was as if
newly created. All my senses vibrated in a condition of highest sensitivity, which
persisted for the entire day.

The experience was highly significant. He comprehended “the essential All-Rightness of
the universe”. (Ultimately, the universe is good and right no matter how bad things seem
to get.)

We felt ourselves get smarter, and looked into each other’s eyes and loved each other for
sharing the understanding that was making us both have these good vibes and this good
smart thing happening together. It was very strong, very high.

I could feel deeply about other people. We felt connected. The side which had been
suppressing emotions did not seem to be the real one. I was in a higher and higher state of
exhilaration and awareness. Things people said had hidden meaning. They said things
that applied to life. Everything that was real seemed to make sense.

I looked down below as if from a very high place and saw a rough square of pavement
which had laid out all of Manhattan in miniature, including people. The proportions, the
infinite detail were perfect. The city within the city. We could have swooped down like
gods and lifted up the Empire State Building.

Various interesting scenes started unfolding in front of my eyes. The persons
participating in these scenes were highly stylized and slightly puppet-like. The general
atmosphere was rather amusing and comical, but with a definite undertone of secrecy and
mystery. (eyes closed)

I realized, “My God, every single second is really eternity.” I felt I’d dipped into eternity
and was experiencing a glimpse of it along with a hint of its vastness. I was blown away
by the enormity of these revelations. By now, I was flying so high, I felt I was in an
exalted state, that I was having a mystical experience of the highest order, something I
always dreamed of.

The acid took me directly to my lucid, “higher self.” It was as though I’d arrived at my
true nature: sincere, clean of purpose, and more useful and wonderful than I’d ever felt in
my life. I can’t fathom what it was that made me feel so “perfect” and “enlightened” or
what specific obstacle the chemical had overcome to enable me to feel so wholesomely
fabulous. I felt a sweeping reassurance that everything was all right after all.

The night was all joyous discoveries, many of which brought me almost to the point of
tears, to laughter and astonished wows regularly. Whole new horizons. I felt humbled and
honored to be in a room with and listening to such enlighted powers. I felt in flash after
flash that I’d never been so high before, never so aware and never—at least not since a
long, long half-remembered time ago—so hopeful and happy.

When I realized that I was being born again, that life goes on and on and on, the feeling
was overwhelming. I was filled with confidence that it was okay to die, because the
consciousness that inhabits the flesh has a higher destiny. It never began and it won’t end.
It just keeps going. Then I was struck with wave after wave of value wisdom, as though
the forms behind human spirituality were hitting me for the first time.

All my senses vibrated in a condition of highest sensitivity.
I crawled to the chair which seemed so high off the floor.
I felt buoyed up to a higher spiritual level by some intense mystical force.
I wanted to bring myself closer to the higher sources of life.
I was aware of a higher sphere.
I was elevated to a higher level of existence.
The experience was intense and highly emotional.
The freedom to get high represented for her a victory of the spirit.
They were all high on the magic.
This is what I’d been seeking, communion with a higher reality.
